Expressions story, 1963-1976

Living in Linksfield, Johannesburg, South Africa and Haifa, Israel

I was captivated by the magic of photography when I was 8 years old.

It is the ability of the camera to capture every nuance of appearance and to place it in the palm of your hand.

This magic is perhaps the most basic aspect of photography and can be found in almost every photograph. See: Self Portrait-Childhood 1963 and Part 1: History of my personal Photography

Discovery of this magic causes an awareness of body and soul that can then make a photograph  become a symbol or metaphor for it (the awareness).

I call these photographs, Expressions.

I experienced soul-moving photographic sessions together with my buddies in the Linksfield golf course and in an abandoned hospital in the old Johannesburg centre.

I was moved by these experiences but as yet did not understand them.

After emigrating to Israel in 1972 I began taking my camera with me wherever I went and so in these years, Expressions became more prolific.

In looking for patterns within the Expressions from these years I can discern more subject matter from Nature than from Urban sources.
