Expressions story, 1980-1995

Afarsemon St. Gilo, Jerusalem. 1980-1985

Working at the Bezalel Academy of Art, as house photographer, I was the principal creator of slides for lectures in all the departments. I reproduced thousands of works of Art from books. Paintings, sculpture, jewellery, architecture, photography, ceramics. You could almost say that I graduated the academy without receiving a degree. I did receive an understanding of Art and artists that has affected me and strengthened my own creativity..

Teaching the “Tools of photography” and their application at the Youth Wing of the Israel Museum contributed to my definitions of Expressions. When you have to explain photography and the meaning of photographs to someone else it also becomes clearer to oneself.

Kibbutz Maale Hachamisha. 1985-1990

Living on a kibbutz means living in a rural environment. As such, Nature abounds in my Expressions and they come from an earthy and slow place in myself. My primary workplace was the cowshed. Patience and care are required when working with animals to maintain good levels of milk production and these are reflected in my photos.

Golden Beach, Herzlia Pituach. 1990-1995

During this period we left the kibbutz. I was lucky and began working at Scitex Coporation after 6 months of unemployment. Scitex was one of the first Israeli hi-tech companies. It started from the field of  producing textiles with the help of computers in 1978 and eventually moved into computer aided pre-press technologies. Because of my photographic knowledge that included basic  theory of color printing I was accepted into a rather exclusive R&D team in the field of digital color printing. It was a dream come true and I went from milking cows into the beginning of the digital era. Scitex also manufactured the first flat-bed scanners and because our team were always looking for images for printing I learned how to scan and many of my images were used for testing our printers and their associated color software. Scitex was not only a big, successful company but was also like an extended family and there was a real feeling of brotherhood that carries on to this day. I was given permission to scan my photos in my spare time for eventual use in a show and started digitising my photos. This enabled me to organise everything chronologically and it became easy to view them. I was able to step back and reflect on my photos.

I began travelling overseas and of course took my camera with me. The subject matter of my Expressions became wider, the quantity grew and the image quality improved.
